We are delighted to have Eric Moeller, the founder of Freewyld, joining us today.
Known for his clear mind and sharp perspective, Eric has never been afraid to challenge the status quo of big corporations or industry transformations.
Join us to hear about Eric’s impressive career journey and the bold steps he is taking to revolutionize the hospitality industry.
Career Journey
Eric started as a carpenter in New Jersey. After reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad, he moved to real estate, where he began flipping houses and investing in small apartment buildings. However, although he was successful, he still felt uninspired. Then, after a chance encounter with a short-term rental investor at a mastermind, he relocated to San Diego, joined the hospitality industry, and began building ventures. Over the last decade, he experimented with various businesses until launching his passion project, Freewyld, where he combines hospitality, design, and digital minimalism to create unique cabin experiences for modern travelers.
After opening the first location in Idyllwild, California, Eric plans to expand globally to help people reconnect with nature and themselves.
Purpose and Origins
Eric founded Freewyld to help people slow down, disconnect from the digital world, and reconnect with themselves through nature and intentional design, thereby counteracting the overstimulation and burnout of modern life.
The Concept of Wyld Mode
Wyld Mode is a state of being that occurs when people shift out of digital overload and into a state of presence. Freewyld cabins are minimalistic to encourage stillness, reflection, and creativity. The space guides guests into a different rhythm. Every sensory detail, from architecture to scent, supports this shift. Wyld Mode helps people return to themselves, free from distractions, and experience clarity, spaciousness, and emotional grounding.
Careful Growth and Expansion Strategy
Eric is carefully expanding Freewyld, avoiding fast-paced scaling to preserve its core mission. His team has been searching for a second location for over two years but has yet to find one that meets their requirements. Instead, they are adding cabins to their current site and refining the overall experience.
Unreasonable Hospitality as a Brand Ethos
Inspired by the book Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara, Eric values Freewyld guests, caring for them in subtle yet profound ways to create moments of connection and warmth. Freewyld is not about luxury in the traditional sense but about meaningful experiences that linger.
Airbnb is Expanding
Airbnb is evolving from a lodging platform into a gateway for immersive, real-world experiences, which reflects a broader societal craving for genuine human interaction in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world. Eric views this shift as a natural parallel to the Freewyld mission to help people ground themselves with meaningful experiences.
Innovation and Core Improvement Can Coexist
Although some hosts feel that Airbnb is overlooking their platform issues by focusing on new features, Eric believes innovation and foundational upgrades can happen simultaneously.
The Need for Presence and Disconnection
With rising social anxiety and tech addiction, especially among younger generations, there is a hunger for environments that can restore human connection and inner calm. Freewyld meets this need by creating phone-free, restorative spaces.
The Value of Presence
As constant connectivity erodes our creativity and emotional availability, being fully present is becoming a rare and deeply valuable experience. Eric urges everyone to pay attention to their tech habits and spend time offline, even in small doses, as he believes those who help others reconnect with themselves and each other will shape a more grounded future for all.
